Decay Prevention

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental ailments in the world. All of the food we eat, and everything we drink, leaves its signature behind on our teeth in the form of plaque. Over time, plaque builds up, and the bacteria that lives in it produces acids that eat away at the enamel of your teeth. This causes cavities and eventual tooth decay, and there’s only so much good oral hygiene will do to stop it.

No matter how disciplined you are at brushing your teeth, there are countless hard-to-reach places that never get as clean as they should. The spaces between your teeth, your gum line, and the crown of your teeth are all places where plaque hides out and resists removal.

Luckily, there are steps you can take that are quick and simple. There things can prevent and reverse the damage caused by plaque. Carlsbad Dental Care is glad to offer these services, and we are able to easily do any and all of them during a routine cleaning!

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride helps your teeth recalcify, adding new enamel to replace what is damaged by plaque. By regularly treating your teeth with fluoride, you can reverse mild decay and protect your teeth against future damage. We offer two types of fluoride treatment, both of which are quick and easy when done during a cleaning.

Standard fluoride treatments are done using a tray full of fluoride gel. The tray is placed in your mouth for several minutes so that the fluoride has time to adhere to your teeth and begin the healing process.

For patients that don’t like the trays (some have a high gag reflex, and others don’t like the taste of the gel), we offer fluoride varnish. Varnish is brushed onto your teeth and dries quickly. By providing a continual dose of fluoride for up to a couple of days, varnish is very effective at protecting your teeth. It also has the added advantage of being great for patients with braces or other orthodontic devices, as it can be brushed in between brackets and wires.

For patients with more advanced decay reversal and protection needs, we can prescribe fluoride treatments for continued use at home.

Dental Sealants

Sealants are a plastic material that is used to fill the chewing surface of your teeth. The deep valleys on your crown are one of the areas most susceptible to cavities. By sealing them off, all chances of decay are prevented! Sealants are great for young patients who are starting to get adult teeth – they’ll be protected from the very beginning! Sealants can be applied in minutes and generally last several years before having to be reapplied.
